MPD Harbor Patrol rescues dog stuck on floating ice

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Police Harbor Patrol on Sunday evening, March 17th rescued a dog on the KK River near Becher Street.

Police say they got the call of a dog stuck on about an eight-foot piece of floating ice just before 6:15 p.m.

Two members of the Harbor Patrol were dispatched and climbed into a water craft and ventured over to the ice block and recovered the dog.

The dog was described as cold, wet and hungry.

Police said the dog appeared to be a pit bull variety -- but they were not sure exactly what breed the dog is.

The dog was taken by MADACC to a veterinary facility where it will be cared for.

The dog had no identification and no microchip.

FOX6 News spoke with a veterinarian caring for the dog, who said based on the dog's mannerisms and the way the dog reacts to humans -- it is likely the dog has owners somewhere.

The dog suffered no injuries. The dog is described as tan -- possibly a Mastiff mix. The vet says the dog is possibly three years old with a stocky build, but not overweight.
