18-year-old Ray Potter to be sentenced for high-speed chase

BROWN CO.(WITI) — 18-year-old Ray Potter of Gladstone, Michigan, the man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase in a vehicle reported stolen out of Illinois on Sunday, January 6th, will be sentenced Tuesday, March 19th.

Potter is facing one count of attempting to flee or elude a traffic officer, one count of criminal damage to property, and one count of extradition-arrest without warrant.

According to police, officials initially tried stopping Potter after receiving dispatch of a stolen vehicle that was weaving on I-43.

When police tried to stop Potter he attempted to flee the scene, leading police on a high-speed chase. Police say the high-speed chase began in Sheboygan County on I-43 northbound and ended in Brown County after the vehicle’s tires had been spiked. Sheriff’s officials say Potter was driving over 100 miles an hour on a couple different occasions after the initial traffic stop.

According to the criminal complaint, Potter was caught and taken into custody near the Manitowoc/Brown County line following a short foot pursuit.

While in custody, the criminal complaint indicates Potter was talkative. He asked the deputy who was in charge of him whether “it was the longest chase that he had been in (it was), how many counties he had gone through, how many cops were involved, etc.”

The complaint says Potter “complained about the music selection in the car he took because it was all rap music and he likes country music.” Potter also stated that he was going to pull over right away when he saw the first officer. However, “when he saw the (deputy’s) squad was a Crown Vic and not a Charger, he decided to see if he could outrun (the deputy).”

Potter faces up to three-and-a-half years in prison and $10,000 in fines if convicted of all the charges.
