Parents make push for new Sturtevant playground

STURTEVANT (WITI) -- After months of planning, a new playground could become a reality for one Sturtevant elementary school.

The Schulte Elementary School playground is in need a of serious pick-me-up.  The equipment is broken and pieces are rusted.

"It's really in desperate need of being replaced," PTA member Leann Pomeroy said.

The PTA has been planning, organizing and fundraising so the school can get a new playground.  IT costs $40,000, they've raised $17,000.  The Racine Unified School District has given $5,000.

"It's kind of snowballed really quickly and has come together really nicely so far, just need some more funds and volunteers to help us on the day of the build," Pomeroy said.

The playground was voted on by the kids.  It will have a rock wall, obstacles and new slides.  Most importantly, it is safer.

"It's going to have everything we don't have," PTA member Alyssa Bird said.

Organizers are hoping to raise the rest of the money by July 27th.  That's when construction will begin.

Fundraisers have been planned, including a pancake breakfast April 20th hosted by the South Shore Fire Dept. Local 2939 and a silent auction May 2nd at the school.
