EPA offers tips for reducing food waste, money loss



WASHINGTON, D.C. (WITI) -- The United Nations estimates some 1.3 billion tons of food is thrown out every year!

Even if it's just a few scraps, every bit you toss is a waste of your money and a waste of the earth's valuable resources.

The EPA says 97% of food waste ends up in landfills -- and your heard-earned money piles up right along with it. The trash breaks down and produces methane, a greenhouse gas.

Taking a few simple steps to reduce food waste won't just improve the environment, but also your bottom line.

The EPA advises checking what is in your refrigerator before heading to the grocery store. And something that is difficult for some: cook and eat what is already available before shopping for more.
