Racine Zoo launches three little pigs naming contest

RACINE (WITI) -- The Racine Zoological Society is launching a naming contest starting April 24 for three baby mini pigs expected to arrive at the Zoo in early May.  The mini pigs will be featured along with Nigerian dwarf goats, Tunis sheep, alpacas, llamas, and other species from around the world in the new interactive Barnyard Safari exhibit opening Memorial Day Weekend at the Zoo.

The community and surrounding areas are encouraged to submit names April 24 through May 8 to the Racine Zoo Facebook page (facebook/racinezoo).  Zoo staff will narrow entries down to five finalists. Public voting for finalists occurs May 15 through May 26.  The winning names will be announced on June 1 on Racine & Me airing on WBME CBS 58 and in The Racine Journal Times.

The winner receives a special Zoo prize package worth $250 that includes three plush pigs, a one-year family membership, and special animal encounter, in addition to “oinking” rights, of course.  One submission per person is allowed.

The mini pig is a small, colorfully spotted pig. Mini pigs are small in size, typically between 20 - 40 pounds. Weight will vary depending on bone structure, health, and length of the pig. Height ranges from 10 to 16 inches and length from chest to base of tail is 12 to 26 inches.
