Denim Day makes a fashion statement and a difference

WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- One look at Wauwatosa East High School and you cannot miss the 1,050 pairs of jeans hanging from the fence.

"It’s bigger than I thought it would ever be," High school senior McKenna Nerone said.

Nerone is the brainchild behind the massive project that aims to bring awareness to sexual violence.

"Each one of those jeans represents somebody that’s a survivor of rape.  I’m just kind of awe-struck," Nerone said.

Denim Day is a worldwide campaign.  It started after a teen in Italy was raped by a driving instructor.  A judge later overturned the conviction because he said the teen must have taken off her jeans because they were so tight.

All of the jeans will be donated to Pathfinders, an organization that helps at-risk teens and runaways.
