26-year-old man found dead of gunshot wound near 13th, Atkinson

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Police say one man is dead after a shooting near 13th and Atkinson.

Police were first called to the scene for a motor vehicle crash just after 4:00 p.m. Thursday. Upon their arrival at the scene, police discovered a red four-door Pontiac that had collided into an unoccupied SUV in the parking lot of a dry cleaning business.

A 26-year-old man in the driver's seat was pronounced dead at the scene -- due to a gunshot wound.

Two passengers in the man's car were not injured.

Police say the victim was shot while being robbed by a male suspect near 13th and Nash.

FOX6 News spoke with the victim's father, who said his son had just turned 26.

"I know my son had his friend and daughter with him," said the victim's father, Lyle McDowell. "Seems like a robbery that went bad. I know he got shot, some kind of way, he got shot in the armpit and hit his head on the air bag."

McDowell found out his son had died after arriving on the scene. He saw his three-year-old granddaughter with her mother in a police car shortly after the incident.

"She's doing fine. She got a little scrape on her head, probably from the car seat, I mean from somewhere in the car," he said.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

"I think they got names and stuff. The investigation should go well. This is a busy street. A lot of people see stuff so we'll see what happens," hopes McDowell.

The Medical Examiner confirmed to FOX6 News on Thursday night they are investigating this case as a homicide and do not believe any injuries sustained in the crash contributed to the man's death.

The man's name has not yet been released.
