Milwaukee mother accused of child neglect appears in court

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A Milwaukee woman who faces two felony charges of neglecting a child (consequence is great bodily harm) appeared in court on Friday afternoon, April 26th. She is 26-year-old Brenda McGee. Now, authorities say there could be more charges after they uncovered deplorable conditions inside her home.

McGee is charged along with 26-year-old Joseph Walker in connection with the death of five-month-old Jeremiah Walker on April 19th. Walker was found face down and unresponsive in a bed with his twin sister. The Medical Examiner’s report says the sister’s stomach was on top of the boy’s head.

In court Friday, McGee stood in front of a court commissioner as her attorney asked bail be $750, claiming McGee was indigent. It was granted. But the mother of eight was ordered no unsupervised contact with her children.

The contact order was put in place after an investigation was conducted at her home on N. 58th St. in Milwaukee -- where her five-month-old son was found dead. Police say the conditions inside the home were anything but decent. The home is now condemned. A criminal complaint say that while police were looking into the circumstances of the baby's death, they found the floors peeling, moldy food in the refrigerator, and filthy living conditions. There were piles of clothes, dog feces, and a smell of urine in the home. Police also recovered a loaded gun that had been stuffed in a couch.

Authorities are also worried about medical neglect. The complaint states five-month-old Jeremiah's eight and weight were akin to a two-month-old child. His twin sister also shows signs of neglect.

McGee is due back in court on May 6th for her preliminary hearing.
