Walmart to open in former Lowe's site in Brown Deer

BROWN DEER (WITI) -- Walmart announced Tuesday, May 7th the company will submit plans to the Village of Brown Deer to convert a former home improvement store at 6300 West Brown Deer Road into a new Walmart.

Walmart will host a neighborhood meeting to present the project and seek community input on Monday, May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Brown Deer Middle School, 5757 West Dean Road.

“We’re excited to present a proposal that will expand shopping opportunities for North Shore customers,” said Lisa B. Nelson, senior manager, public affairs & government relations for Walmart in Wisconsin.  “We look forward to working with the Village to enhance the business corridor, create jobs, grow the tax base, and repurpose an existing vacant building into a vibrant shopping destination.”

Walmart is one of the leading retailers to incorporate sustainability into its store concepts and will work to include environmentally friendly features into its Brown Deer location.

“Sustainable practices are integrated into every aspect of our business,” said Nelson. “We are proud to work with Village officials to create a project consistent with the Village’s Comprehensive Plan and also to recycle the existing building.”

The proposed Walmart store square footage will offer shoppers a wide variety of general merchandise, such as electronics, apparel, and housewares, a full line of grocery and pharmacy services. The new retail establishment is expected to create approximately 300 jobs in the community, a mix of full- and part-time.

Walmart operates 88 stores, 12 Sam’s Clubs and 3 Distribution Centers in Wisconsin employing approximately 27,483 associates. The average hourly full-time wage for associates in Wisconsin is $12.63. Last year, Walmart collected more than $198.3 million in taxes and fees on behalf of the state of Wisconsin and paid an additional $74.4 million.

Last year in Wisconsin, Walmart spent nearly $3.5 billion for merchandise and services supporting 64,784 supplier jobs, according to Dun & Bradstreet. Walmart has been a proud community partner in the state of Wisconsin since 1985 and last year donated $20.5 million to nonprofits.
