Officials in Fond du Lac investigating suspicious playground fire

FOND DU LAC (WITI) -- A playground in Fond du Lac went up in flames on Sunday night, May 12th -- and officials believe it may have been intentionally set.

The fire broke out at Hamilton Park around 8:00 p.m. Sunday, destroying one of the park's three playground sections.

Officials say two men and two women were seen in the area around the time of the fire. They are being considered persons of interest.

The park superintendent says the city's insurance will cover the estimated $10,000 in damage.

"We have an arsonist out there. Not to cause any alarm to anybody, but the people who start fires intentionally, some of them do it for, because it gives them some sort of sick gratification. Sometimes they keep going until they get caught," Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O'Leary said.

The park superintendent says the city's insurance will cover the estimated $10,000 in damage, but it may take about a month for the equipment to be replaced.
