Funeral held for 17-year-old Washington Park shooting victim

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Family and friends gathered Friday, May 17th for the funeral of 17-year-old Daniel Gardner. Gardner was shot and killed at a Milwaukee playground on May 6th.

"This is not a good feeling to lose a family member," said Gardner's sister, Irenita Cosey.

Loved ones remembered Gardner's lively spirit.

"Just a cool kid, funny, joyful," Cosey said.

Those in attendance consoled each other and tried to make sense of the tragedy. Gardner was at the park with his girlfriend and her younger brother when the suspect came up to him and they exchanged words. The man shot and killed Gardner in broad daylight.

"I'm angry," said Cosey. "It's too close for comfort to not know anything or for someone not to be in custody now."

Initially, due to enhanced park security, police said they were following up on leads. As of now, no suspects have been identified.

"I think it's ridiculous, overwhelming, but there is nothing we can do about it. Just praying someone is caught or someone speaks up," said Cosey.

Gardner was laid to rest at Graceland Cemetary.
