Loved ones grieving after one-year-old child found dead in West Allis

WEST ALLIS (WITI) -- The investigation continues into what may have caused the death of a 21-month-old child on Saturday, June 1st.

The West Allis Police Department responded to a call of an unresponsive child at a mobile home park on W. Greenfield Ave. around 4:15 Saturday afternoon.

Officials attempted to resuscitate the child but were unsuccessful.

Neighbors told FOX6 News that the child's older brother was babysitting and stepped away to use the bathroom. When he came back, the child was unresponsive.

Shannon Schroeder, who was the child's Godmother describes the death as a tragedy -- and describes the young boy as "the coolest kid ever."

"Completely out of the blue. No one saw anything coming. Hold your kids tighter. That's really all you can do," Schroeder said.

Officials say the child's sibling and father were at home at the time of the child's death. Officials do not believe that the child's death was a result of co-sleeping.

Officials say they are not aware of the child having any health issues.

Schroeder says in the absence of clues as to what caused the child's death, "horrible things happen, and sometimes there's just no reason."

The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, along with officers and detectives, are investigating the incident to determine the cause and manner of death.
