Teachers encourage summer reading with 'Call Me Maybe' parody

OCONOMOWOC (WITI) -- School leaders at Summit Elementary School in Oconomowoc are determined to have their students reading over summer break.

Teachers and staff put together a parody video to the tune of Carly Rae Jepsen's hit song "Call Me Maybe" and called it "Read Like Crazy." They wanted to speak to kids in a way they'd understand.

"Our principal, Robin Wilson, came up with the lyrics to the song and we based it off what we had seen the Harvard baseball team do, and their video," says Summit Reading Specialist Julie Artz.

Teachers say they want students to feel that reading equals fun, and to know that the foundation for all learning comes from books -- whether they are silly stories, folk tales, or history lessons.

"It just helps kids remember that over the summer you gotta read. You gotta read to get higher in the starting of the next school year so you can get better and better at reading," says student Olivia Forsyth.

Last year the staff made a parody of Usher's song "More," encouraging students to read more books.

"I really think they're getting it," said Artz.
