Two killed, three hurt in violent Dodge County crash

DODGE CO. (WITI) -- Two people were killed and three were hurt in a violent crash involving four vehicles in Dodge County on Thursday afternoon, June 6th.

The wreck happened just before 4 p.m. on State Highway 33 between County Highway AY and Madison Rd. in the Town of Herman.

Vehicle and occupant information as follows:

Officials say the crash began when a Ford Expedition SUV was headed eastbound on Highway 33 and the driver tried to pass a semi. The driver wasn't able to pass the semi, and as that driver tried to get back into the eastbound lane behind the semi, the driver struck the semi and lost control of the SUV -- which drifted into the westbound lanes. A pickup truck headed westbound struck the SUV, and another vehicle traveling westbound on Highway 33 behind the pickup also struck the SUV.

The driver of the SUV and the driver of the pickup truck were pronounced dead. Four others were injured, including on person who is in critical condition. Among the injured is a child that was ejected from one of the vehicles involved.

Neighbors near the accident site say this isn't the first time they're seen a terrible crash on this stretch of road.

"This is a bad area because it's so wide open, people think they can gun it and pass and they don't quite make it," said Sally Punzel.

Punzel also said this isn't the first time a crash in the area has resulted in fatalities.

"It's scary and people should be a little more careful," warned Punzel.

Officials are investigating whether alcohol/drug impairment was a contributing factor of this crash.

Names of those involved have not yet been released.
