Barrett welcomes summer youth interns to city government

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Mayor Barrett welcomed summer youth interns to the City of Milwaukee’s Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) Monday, June 17th at Manpower World Headquarters. This is the ninth year of SYIP.

More than 100 young city residents between the ages of 16 and 19 will work 20 hours per week at city government including a weekly “Friday Education Day.”

The program has placed more than 1,400 young people thought various city government departments.  This year there are positions in various city departments including the Assessor, City Clerk, City Development, Department of Administration, Health, HACM, Library, DPW-Sanitation, DPW-Forestry, DPW-Engineering, DPW-Parking, DPW-Water, DPW Infrastructure, Department of Neighborhood Services, Mayor, Fire, and Port.

SYIP is an eight week program ending on August 9th.  Participants are paid $7.25 per hour.

The Summer Youth Internship Program is part of the larger Mayor’s Earn and Learn Program which provides young people with an introduction to the world of work in private sector businesses and community organizations, too
