Police: Suspect accidentally shot following robbery, chase

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police were on the scene Monday, June 17th of an officer-involved shooting that occurred near Capitol Drive and North 53rd Street. Police say an officer shot a robbery suspect.

Police say it all started around noon on Monday, with reports of an armed robbery in the 4700 block of N. 48th Street.

Officials say two individuals fled the scene in a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix after obtaining money.

Officials spotted the vehicle near 53rd and Melvina, and gave chase. Police say the suspects ditched the car and took off on foot.

Officials were able to capture one of the suspects (a 29-year-old Milwaukee man) near the 3900 block of N. 53rd Street.

Police say as the suspect was taken into custody, an officer accidentally discharged his handgun -- striking the suspect in the thigh.

Police say the suspect has a lengthy arrest record, including weapons charges and drug charges.

The 30-year-old officer who fired his weapon has been with MPD for 12 years, and is on administrative duty until the investigation is completed -- as is standard procedure.

The second suspect remains at large -- and police say their investigation continues.
