Fire crews called to scene of structure fire in Racine

RACINE (WITI) -- Fire crews responded to the scene of a structure fire at 4023 Erie St. in Racine Saturday morning, June 22nd.

According to officials, crews arrived on the scene at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews saw smoke showing from the eaves on the west side of the building and vent pipes on the roof.

According to authorities, the fire was contained to two units adjacent to each other. One unit did not have a smoke detector. One unit did have a smoke detector, but it is unclear at this time if it was operating.

Fire officials say the manually activated alarm system did function when it was operated and the alarm in the hallways did sound.

The Red Cross responded to the scene as was able to find temporary housing for the residents of one unit and the residents of the other unit were able to find shelter with family.

Officials say some building systems need to be restored before the rest of the units can be occupied again.

The fire caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the structure and $5,000 in damage to contents.

The cause of the fire is unknown and remains under investigation.
