With state budget signing, kringle becomes state pastry

RACINE (WITI) -- With the signing of the 2013-2015 state budget by Gov. Scott Walker on Sunday, kringle officially becomes Wisconsin's state pastry.

Kringle, a distinctive, oval-shaped, flaky Danish pastry containing a variety of fruit and nut fillings, has been a Racine County tradition since Danish immigrants brought the delicious treat with them in the mid-19th century. Over the years, kringle’s popularity has put Racine County on the food map and given the county the title of “America’s Kringle Capital.”

“We’re delighted that Wisconsin lawmakers have officially recognized a wonderful product that is uniquely Racine and uniquely Wisconsin,” said Dave Blank, Real Racine CEO.

Racine area bakeries proudly ship kringle all over the world. But the best way to sample this mouthwatering pastry is to visit Racine County: “America’s Kringle Capital.”
