MPD releases crime statistics for first half of 2013

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Crime statistics released by the Milwaukee Police Department show that overall crime in the city has decreased so far this year, but violent crime is up.

The numbers are for the first six months of this year -- compared to last year.

Overall crime was down 8%, but overall violent crimes were up 5%.

The increase in violent crime is driven by the increase in robberies, which was up by 20% compared to 2012.

Since 2007, overall violent crime has decreased 15%.
