Temporary location set up for marriage licenses in Milwaukee County

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The sudden closure of the Milwaukee County Courthouse left some people in a panic. But on Thursday, July 11th, some of those people specifically those needing their marriage licenses got some relief.

The county opened a temporary office at the City Campus Building on Wells for people to apply for, or pick up, their marriage licenses.

The county clerk said the space is a little smaller than they are used to, they have limited computer access, and they can only take cash at this location, but so far, its working.

“We didn’t find out until yesterday we won’t be in there until Monday. So, all county departments are scrambling to find space so we can serve the public. So far this seems to be working out. Like I said it’s a little cramped, but on the first floor and readily accessible for people. And we hope we can meet everyone’s needs,” said Milwaukee County Clerk Joseph Czarnezki.

Czarnezki said even before they opened the doors a line had formed.

"It`s been very, very busy. We were set to open at 9. We had people lining up at 8:30,” said Czarnezki, "Well over a dozen people already applied for marriage licenses in less than an hour and we`ve had probably twice that many pick up their marriage license."

It was enough to calm the nerves of soon to be newlyweds, on a deadline. “We made it here, really no issues at all. We waited like five minutes. They did a great job of making it convenient for us,” said Sean Beuche.

City Campus Building is located at 2711 W. Wells. It will be open for marriage licenses until the courthouse re-opens, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
