Groups protest Zimmerman verdict with rallies in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Late Saturday, July 13th, a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin inside a Sanford, Florida courtroom. In Milwaukee, dozens gathered in two separate protests against the verdict.

Police say between 50-75 people were involved in a protest near Hopkins and Hampton Saturday night.

One person was arrested for resisting or obstructing an officer.

Meanwhile, the group "Occupy Milwaukee" tweeted out pictures of a rally Saturday night near Fratney and Locust.

Police say after about 30 minutes, the group dispersed without incident.

Another rally was scheduled for Sunday near MLK and Hadley.

That group was united in their disgust at Zimmerman's acquittal -- a Florida man who says he killed 17-year-old Martin in self-defense.

"There's no justice. There's no justice in America. It makes me want to move out of the United States because there's no justice," one demonstrator told FOX6 News.

The group formed a circle near the Martin Luther King Jr. statue. They heard from several speakers, including Craig Stingley, whose son was killed in December. Stingley says Corey stole items from a store, and then returned the, but was restrained by three customers.

The teen later died.

"These are three grown men who took the life of my son, strangled him. Strangled the life out of him, no different than what happened here," Stingley said.

The group marched down MLK Drive to downtown, where they formed another circle.

Tempers flared when a bicyclist shouted at the group for blocking the street.

By and large, the protest was peaceful. About 150 people gathered to say a Florida jury has sent the rest of the country a terrible message.

Protesters plan to demonstrate at Nathan Hale High School in West Allis on Monday night, July 15th.
