Highway 100 & Bluemound Road closure could snarl traffic Monday

WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- The work week is set to begin again, and there could be some disruption in your commute on Monday! The state's second busiest intersection, at Highway 100 and Bluemound closed down on Saturday, and will remain closed through the end of the month. While the construction has folks looking for an alternative route, businesses in the area are looking for ways to get customers coming back.

The closure of the intersection at Highway 100 and Bluemound is expected to last 12 days.

Just outside the sub shop Suburpia on Bluemound Road in Wauwatosa, the normal view of cars passing through the busy intersection has been replaced with construction equipment.

"This one, Highway 100, is our biggest project," Ryan Luck with the Wisconsin DOT said.

For Suburpia founder Will Foley, the disruption in traffic is all in the eye of the beholder.

"You just got to, what does my father say? Go with the flow. Go with the flow," Foley said.

That's exactly what Jerry Wagner of Hartford did on Sunday.

"I knew there was construction, but I didn't know I'd have to walk half a mile," Wagner said.

Wagner knew he was going to get a sub, no matter what the obstacle may be.

"I had to park on Hwy 100 and Wisconsin Avenue, walked up through construction, which I almost broke my ankle, to get here," Wagner said.

"One way or another they get here," Foley said.

With his subs in hand, other obstacles threatened Wagner's return journey.

"It looks like rain, but it'll be worth it," Wagner said.

Foley says even with a giant crane hovered over the intersection, business has been good.

"I'm glad it's not over my building because they put a big generator in there and that thing drops, it wouldn't be good. (But) we're really busy. It's been magic for us. I mean everybody else is complaining. But we've been really fortunate," Foley said.

Foley says his place is a destination, and his customers have remained loyal throughout. However, other businesses in the area have had to cut their hours and look to selling their products in nearby areas.

The Highway 100/Bluemound Road construction project is expected to be finished by August 1st.
