Boundaries of Drinking Water Health Advisory area expanded

WASHINGTON COUNTY (WITI) -- The Department of Natural Resources is modifying and expanding the boundaries of the Drinking Water Health Advisory Area that was created due to the July 17th, 2012 release of gasoline from a pipeline in the Town of Jackson, Washington County. This action is being taken after analyzing multiple rounds of data collected from wells located in the area of the spill.

The Drinking Water Health Advisory Area is being expanded in a westerly direction to include homes in the Crosswind Farms Subdivision and three wells along Western Avenue west of Maple Road.

This expansion is due to multiple detections of benzene that exceeded drinking water standards in a water supply well between Western Avenue and Mill Road. This well is on the westem boundary of the previously established advisory area. Regional groundwater flow is to the west in this area and may also be controlled by bedrock fracture traces that trend east-west. Water supply wells within Crosswind Farms Subdivision and along Western Avenue were sampled on July 17 and 18, 2013 and petroleum compounds were not detected above the laboratory limit of detection in any of the wells.

The expansion of the Drinking Water Health Advisory includes houses on both sides of the following sections of road:

The Drinking Water Health Advisory will still include homes on both sides of the following sections of road:

Homeowners with wells along these roads are advised to use bottled water or water from a known, safe source for drinking, cooking and other food preparation.

The location of the modified Drinking Water Health Advisory Area is shown on the Town of Jackson Drinking Water Advisory Area Map.
