Teenager shot, in a coma after witnessing grocery store robbery

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- An 18-year-old man was shot on Tuesday, August 8th after witnessing a grocery store robbery near 9th Pl. and Hayes.

Two men entered Salas Grocery and brought two 24-packs of beer to the counter where 12-year-old Daisy Salas and her father, store owner Juan Salas, were standing.

"He had diamond tattoos by his eyes, going down," remembers Daisy.

The men asked the price on the beer seconds before grabbing it off the counter and darting out of the store. The men met up with another man waiting near a car outside.

"My dad runs out from here behind the counter and tries to go chase after them," said Daisy. "They had a gun but they put it back inside the car."

Juan went back inside the store where he and Daisy were safe. An 18-year-old male, however, was in his car across the street when he also saw the robbery happen.

The teenager apparently chased after the group of men on 9th Place. One of the suspects allegedly fired two shots, hitting the teen and causing him to veer off the road into a tree.

A family friend of the victim says the teenager slipped into a coma after the shooting.

Juan Salas says at least one of the suspects visited his store earlier in the week to purchase a case of beer. Daisy Salas says her father "couldn't sleep" when thinking about what happened.
