Indiana church community handing out drug test kits to families

INDIANA (WITI) -- A church community in Dearborn County, Indiana wants to help parents keep their children drug free.

The growing heroin epidemic has church members especially concerned.

Several organizations have worked together to launch "Protect Your Family" -- a program that distributes free drug test kids to parents.

Each kit contains a vial for a urine sample and instructions on how to read the results.

The kits test for a presence of marijuana, methamphetamines, cocaine, painkillers and other substances.

"Someone says: "Here, try this", and hands you a marijuana cigarette, you can say: 'No, my parents drug-test me.' You're letting your kid know: 'look, I'm not doing it because I don't trust you, I'm doing this because I love you,'" Dearborn County Prosecutor Aaron Negangard said.

Organizers say they hope to make an impression on fifth and sixth-grade students because young people start experimenting with drugs around age 13.
