Lt. Jeff Kreft Memorial Golf Outing held Sunday in Delavan

DELAVAN (WITI) -- A golf outing was held on Sunday, August 11th in Delavan in honor of Twin Lakes Police Lt. Jeff Kreft, and over 100 people came together to remember Lt. Kreft.

36-year-old Kreft was killed on May 25th when his car was struck head on while he was on his way home from working his shift at the Twin Lakes Police Department.

Kreft is survived by his wife and two sons, ages five and seven.

“Obviously it was a very tragic situation. We lost him at an early age. It’s very heartwarming to see all the people here that, I think we had 104 golfers today, plus other people coming for the dinner. It’s part of the grieving process. Everyone can get together, talk about Jeff, remember the good things about Jeff and keep his memory alive," Twin Lakes Police Chief Dale Recer said.

Organizers say because Kreft had a passion for law enforcement and helped a number of individuals on their path to a career in law enforcement, much of the money raised during Sunday's golf outing will benefit the Lt. Jeff Kreft Scholarship Program.

Scholarships will be awarded to promising individuals in order to help them with their education as they pursue their career in law enforcement.

“I think he would be, if he was able to be here today, he would be so humbled at the outpouring of support for the event. And you know, it just really reflects how great of a person he was and how he touched so many lives. It’s absolutely crazy that we’ve been able to raise so much money and have gotten so much support. It just shows you how great of a guy Jeff was and how everyone wants to be a part of this," Sarah Smith, who helped organize the event said.

The remaining proceeds will go to support C.O.P.S. camp (Concerns of Police Survivors).  This camp is run purely on donations alone, and is an annual camp, held in Walworth County in East Troy, WI.

The purpose of this camp is to allow the children of Police Officers killed on duty to come together for a week and share the camaraderie of other children, along with gaining insight and self-confidence through professional counselors helping them cope with their grief.

Following the golf outing was a reception with a silent auction, dinner and a live auction.

The goal was to raise about $10,000, but instead, the group will raise about $20,000 through Sunday's event alone.

Smith says support from local businesses and three corporate sponsors helped immensely.
