No charges to be filed in Kochanski's Beer Hall shooting incident

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office has announced no charges will be filed in the shooting incident that occurred at Kochanski's Concertina Beer Hall.

A 23-year-old Milwaukee man was shot and killed during a robbery attempt at the tavern in the 1900 block of S. 37th Street around 12 a.m. on August 16th.

That man has been identified as Carmelo Matos-Arzola.

Andy Kochanski, owner of Concertina Beer Hall, says three armed suspects attempted to rob him at gunpoint. That’s when Kochanski produced a handgun and shot one of the suspects.

The suspect died on the scene, and the other two suspects fled.

“I defended myself,” said Kochanski. “I did the shooting. Two guys with guns, what are you going to do? Protect yourself and your customers. That’s what I did.”

The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office says "Mr. Kochanski's actions were lawfully permissible in defense of himself and others."

A second suspect, 21-year-old Jose Munoz is in custody at a Chicago-area hospital, where he is receiving treatment for a gunshot wound he suffered during the robbery attempt.

Police are still seeking a third suspect.
