Kenosha mother launches campaign to get drivers to slow down

KENOSHA (WITI) -- "No Need To Speed" is a message a Kenosha mother is hoping to spread throughout Kenosha, and also, statewide.

Amee Janus says drivers in her Camp Lake neighborhood are not getting the message to slow down.

"Speed limit is 25, and I would see 30, 35, sometimes even 40, 45," Janus said.

45 miles-per-hour in areas where there are no sidewalks, and where her daughters play outside.

Janus has put up signs warning drivers in her neighborhood -- signs she'd like to see in every neighborhood in Kenosha.

"We're responsible for driving safely and being aware that there are kids out there that really forget some things sometimes. As much as we teach our kids to not go near the road they forget what happens, and I remember many years ago my little brother, I was supposed to be watching, he walked right in the middle of a highway," Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said.

Beth says Camp Lake isn't the only neighborhood facing speeding drivers.

"The biggest complaint that I get no matter where I go are people speeding in the neighborhoods on certain roads," Sheriff Beth said.

That's why Janus' grassroots organization WISE Safety and the Kenosha County Sheriff's Department are hoping drivers will spread the message, and post signs to remind drivers to slow down.

"This just helps remind people that it's not just you. We're responsible for driving safely and being aware that there are kids out there," Sheriff Beth said.

The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department and WISE Safety is looking for sponsors to its "No Need To Speed" campaign.
