Milw. neighborhood cleans up for H-D 110th Anniversary

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- With the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary just around the corner, one Milwaukee neighborhood is cleaning up to welcome out-of-towners.

The Martin Drive Neighborhood, in the shadow of the Harley-Davidson plant on Juneau Ave., is expected to be a major tourist destination during the anniversary celebration. With more attention being focused on the area, residents want to make sure visitors have a good impression of the city.

"Come on and visit us here in Milwaukee! We have H-D here but we have others who want to keep the city clean and beautiful. We welcome everybody to this city," said Cynthia Hannah.

Hannah coordinates volunteers from the Nehemiah Project, a group home for at-risk teens.

"They are learning socialization skills, how to work together and give back by doing something meaningful," said Hannah.

Another Milwaukee resident, David Weber, became unemployed in January and has taken it upon himself to help rehabilitate neighborhoods in need of a little sprucing.

"The way to build community is to get the residents to come out and work together -- open those lines of communication," said Weber.

Since he's been out of work, Weber says it's important for him to stay active and give back to his community.

A dozen businesses also contributed to Weber's clean-up efforts.
