Veterans on Day Four of walk from Milwaukee to Los Angeles

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The road ahead is long for Tom Voss and Anthony Anderson. The Iraq War veterans were on Monday, September 2nd, on Day Four of a 155 day mission. The two are walking from Milwaukee to Los Angeles!

"It`s going pretty good. It was slow going in the beginning. Friday just killed us with the heat. The first day I ended up getting two blisters on my heels, but now we`re getting our legs underneath us and we`re actually doing some mileage now," Voss said.

The two are making the trek to raise money for Dryhootch -- a non-profit with services for veterans, including PTSD counseling.

Anderson and Voss admit they've had their own struggles.

"So far what I've been thinking about is how my own issues have influenced by life and the people like my family and friends," Anderson said.

The two got a grand sent-off on Friday from the Milwaukee War Memorial, which included a proclamation by Mayor Barrett.

On Monday, they were 54 miles into the 2,700 mile journey.

Along the way, they plan to teach others about the hardships veterans face at home.

"22 vets a day are killing themselves, so I believe that averages out to a vet every 65 minutes," Voss said.

It is also a time to decompress from their own deployments.

"Walk and think about what you want to think about.  Without the phone ringing, without the email just kind of pinging away, without all these different distractions," Anderson said.

So far, Anderson and Voss have raised $50,000. They hope to double that number by the end of their trip, which should be January 31st.

Along the way, they are staying by invitation in the homes of strangers.
