Family still looking for answers after 25-year-old man gunned down

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- If he were alive, Eric Benson would have spent Sunday, September 15th celebrating his daughter's first birthday. Instead, his family marched through a north side neighborhood, demanding answers in his unsolved murder case.

Police have released few details on this case.

25-year-old Benson and a 41-year-old man were shot on August 2nd. Benson died from his injuries three days later.

More than six weeks after the shooting, Benson's family has no idea who pulled the trigger, and why.

Benson's mother, Betty joined other relatives and friends to march through the north side neighborhood where her son was shot to death last month.

"I haven't been able to sleep. I hadn't had no peace, no rest. You know, it's been very difficult for me, my kids, my family," Betty Benson said.

Sunday was supposed to be a day of celebration for this family.

"We planned this day, like months ago. He was so excited and and happy about it, and now he won't even be here to enjoy it - not physically. I know his spirit is here, but he's not here," Betty Benson said.

Benson's family says he was sitting on a porch when someone began shooting. It is unclear whether Benson was the target.

He tried to flee, but was struck by a bullet in the back of his head.

No one has been taken into custody, and no motive has been determined.

"We asking that somebody give us some type of answer, some type of closure. We not gonna feel complete until the person that did it to him is locked up behind bars," Benson's girlfriend, Symone Bankhead said.

The family believes someone in the neighborhood knows more than investigators do. During Sunday's march, they hoped to convince someone to speak up.

"You don't have to give your name. Call anonymous but put yourself in my place and know the feeling that I feel," Betty Benson said.

The Benson family is offering a cash reward for anyone who offers information that leads to the arrest of Benson's killer.

They are collecting donations for the reward. If you'd like to help out, you can donate to the "Eric Benson Memorial Fund" at the Brewery Credit Union.
