Sikh professor at Columbia in New York attacked over the weekend

NEW YORK (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned a professor at Columbia University in New York who is a member of the Sikh community says he was involved in an attack over the weekend.

Since the mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek in August of 2012, members of the Sikh community have been pushing to get attacks against Sikhs officially classified as hate crimes.

Now, Assistant Professor Dr. Prabhjot Singh says he was swarmed in Central Park by 20 attackers who were yelling "Get Osama" and "terrorist."

The professor suffered injuries to his face, displaced teeth and severe bruising.

New York police are investigating.
