Eagle Scout project has special meaning for Oak Creek boy and family

OAK CREEK (WITI) -- Becoming an Eagle Scout is a lofty goal that many boys will never attain. But never say never to one scout from Oak Creek!

Zac Blohm has been in Boy Scouts for most of his life. The Oak Creek freshman is now working towards becoming an Eagle Scout. To earn the Eagle Scout designation requires a community project, and Blohm is making that happen at Jefferson Elementary School in West Allis.

"He`s friends with one of our teachers, knows her through his church and came to me and said 'I have this great idea I`d like to propose.' I said 'go with it. I love it. Do what you need to do,'" Jefferson Elementary School Principal Lynn Wall said.

Wall says the school is in dire need of an expanded playground. With 570 kids at the school, the current setup isn't nearly enough.

"I know he`s going to (pull it off).  I knew when he walked in and he said `I can do that` and I thought 'that guy has some conviction -- I think he's going to go through with it,' and he is," Wall said.

"This is very important to me.  It`s a big project and I plan on dedicating this playground to my sister. I`m going to call it Veronica`s Place.  She recently passed away earlier this year and I`m really grateful that Jefferson is giving me the opportunity to focus on something positive," Blohm said.

"Veronica was born at 34 weeks and she was in the NICU for about four-and-a-half weeks and honestly during that time Zac really, our whole family went through a lot of course. She was home for about a week and then January 1st she had a short moment of apnea where for whatever reason she wasn`t able to breathe. Because she was so small during that time that her little body wasn`t able to recover from that moment of apnea," Blohm's mother, Heather Kosloske said.

Kosloske says the entire family is behind Blohm's project, and for them, it's for more than just an Eagle Scout badge.

"Honestly it really is healing for us to get involved in something in the community and it`s going to be a place that we can come to, honestly and thinking of Veronica," Kosloske said.

Blohm must raise $55,000 just to get all the materials he needs for the playground. Then, if he's successful, he'll face the next challenge.

"I`m going to need 75 volunteers to help me build this playground," Blohm said.
