Health Care Career Expo looks to hire nearly 600 people

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It was three months ago when Demetrius Collins moved to Milwaukee, and he's spent that time searching for a job. But now he's feeling confident about his future after attending the Milwaukee Health Care Career Expo.

"I gave out 15 of my resumes out of 30. They're telling me I should apply. I've been having interview sign ups. It's been going really good so far," says Collins.

The expo has 40 employers in the health care field offering around 600 jobs.

"What's great about this is that you are able to put a face to a name, instead of just randomly sending your resume in," says job seeker Yvette Willis.

Each job seeker is screened before attending the event to make sure they have the minimum requirements for the positions being offered and to offer resume and interview tips.

"The employers know they are looking at candidates that do meet the minimum requirements and job seekers have the opportunity to talk to employers, sell themselves, and many employers are interested in hiring folks today right here on the spot," says Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Secretary  Reggie Newson.

As for those who couldn't attend, there are other options.

The Department of Workforce Development launched a website just 2 weeks ago called Skill Explorer.

This allows people to simply type in their career and they're matched with jobs available across the state with similar skill sets.

"It allows the research of where the jobs are, what the jobs pay, and how one can transfer job skills easily," says Department of Workforce Development Researcher Gordon Sussman.
