Some say Town of Delafield fire station needs to be replaced

TOWN OF DELAFIELD (WITI) -- Some in the Town of Delafield are asking for a new fire station. They say it's a matter of safety.

From the outside, it's like any other fire station. But beyond the garages and red brick, the inside of the Town of Delafield fire station is much different.

"It's an old, antiquated station that's overcrowded," said Fire Chief Paul Kozlowski. "It's really difficult to work under these conditions."

The 5,000 square foot building houses five trucks and at times, 40 firefighters. Trucks are parked near gear, some nearly hit the ceiling, Bathrooms double as storage, space is limited.

Now, some town leaders want to build a new fire station. A referendum will be placed on the February ballot.

"We need a fire department that can function safely and effectively and be there when you need them," said Cindi Duchow, Town Supervisor.

The plan would put the station more than a mile south of the current location. It could cost close to $4 million. Homeowners could end up paying $100 more on their property taxes.

"I do support that they need a station, but not at the huge cost to the taxpayers and not to move further away from a big population of the town," said resident Lisa Cunningham.

It's something firefighters hope to get passed; pushing for a new building and more space.

Voters have rejected similar plans twice in the past. Leaders are hopeful the third time will be the charm.
