Whitnall H.S. students help to clean Milwaukee County Parks

HALES CORNERS (WITI) -- It's one of the largest volunteer efforts to assist Milwaukee County Parks. Hundreds of students from Whitnall High School took part in the event on Tuesday, October 22nd.

The students traded their pens and test booklets for work gloves, brooms, rakes and shovels.

"It's something different, nice way to bond with the kids. Instead of working a basketball game or football game, we're doing the community project game," said Brian Van Buren.

Van Buren is supervising his sophomore class at Kulwicki Park -- one of three Milwaukee County parks being cleaned up. The baseball diamonds were edged and the playground was swept.

For J.T. Reed, this service project is about pride of ownership.

"I go past this park multiple times and I see this park kind of dirty stuff so we'll clean it up and it feels great," said Reed.

Whitnall Park and the Root River Parkway were the two other areas cleaned up by Whitnall High School students. This is the first time the student body got involved in this service project.
