54-year-old inmate charged in attack on correctional officers

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say two correctional officers were assaulted on Monday, November 25th at the Milwaukee County Jail.

Sheriff's officials say 54-year-old inmate John Meyers was being transported from a cell to a court appearance.

Officials say Meyers charged at a correctional officer in the jail and ignored orders to return to the cell. He struck a female officer in the face with a closed fist.

Officials say he continued to resist, and another officer who responded to assist suffered a broken ankle.

The officer with the broken ankle and Meyers, who had a facial cut were conveyed to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Meyers was in custody for battery and now faces charges of assault by a prisoner with a penalty of up to 12-and-a-half years of imprisonment if convicted.
