MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee Police have learned that the 26-year-old man who was taken into custody after a fatal hit-and-run crash near 6th and Hayes on Wednesday evening, November 27th was not driving the rental truck at the time of the crash.

Police say they have identified the driver and are seeking him now.

Milwaukee police were called to 6th and Hayes on the city’s south side just before 4:30 p.m. Officials say 21-year-old Cheyenne Jackson and 18-month-old Erieanna Matousek were both struck by a vehicle. The driver fled the scene. The toddler later died.

"I'm angry, I'm sad, I'm devastated. I can't believe someone would have the nerve to hit my two girls and keep going," said Brad Matousek, Erieanna's father.

Police say the toddler was in her mother’s arms at the time of the accident. The two were walking westbound across S. 6th Street in a crosswalk when a rental truck turned southbound onto S. 6th Street from Hayes, striking the mother and child.

"I'll miss everything -- her saying 'daddy,' holding her, loving her, her loving me," said Matousek. "It was my only baby girl."

According to sources, the two were headed toward a child care center across the street.

The mother was taken to the hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury.

Anyone with information about the suspect in this case is being asked to call Milwaukee Police.
