Salvation Army says Red Kettle campaign is down

WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- On "Giving Tuesday," the Salvation Army is reporting it's Red Kettle fundraising campaign is down from last year.

Giving Tuesday is a day for giving thanks. After the busy Thanksgiving and holiday shopping weekend, folks are encouraged to give to charity.

The Salvation Army says this season, its Red Kettle campaign is down more than $65,000 vs. 2012.

"It's a passing concern for me, though," Major Stephen Yoder said.

Major Yoder says he has faith that the good people of southeastern Wisconsin will pitch in to help out.

"We are asking -- especially on Giving Tuesday, for people to do what they can do -- please do it, so that we know where we are and can anticipate how we continue to serve suffering humanity both seasonally and throughout all of 2014," Major Yoder said.

The Salvation Army's Wisconsin-Upper Michigan Divisional Secretary says Giving Tuesday highlights the continuing need for support.

"It's just reminding people everywhere there are all kinds of opportunities for giving,"

Chico Pierce has been ringing the bell for the Salvation Army for two years.

"Actually, I didn't think I was gonna make it the first week, but God blessed me to make it the first week, and that was awesome. No matter how cold it is, I still strut, still ring the bell," Pierce said.

The Red Kettles will be available until Christmas Eve, but the Salvation Army's Red Kettle Campaign continues through January 31st, 2014.
