Suspect in custody in connection with Fond du Lac standoff, fire

FOND DU LAC (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned a suspect is in custody in connection with a standoff in Fond du Lac that began after a house fire.

Officials responded to the scene just after 9:00 a.m. Monday, where it was determined that a fire at a residence on N. Hickory Street was suspicious in nature, and a Fond du Lac man was identified as a person of interest for the incident.

Police officers responded to the area of 871 S. Main Street to speak with the man at his residence. Before they could make contact with him, he opened fire on the officers.

Police say multiple shots were fired, but no one was identified as being injured.

Several departments were called to the scene, including the Fond du Lac Police Department's SWAT Team and the Brown/Outagamie Bomb Squad.

Officials were able to make contact by telephone with the man, and were able to have him exit the residence and surrender to officers outside.

The man was taken into custody without incident.

No one was injured.

While the man was in custody, police say there were threats made referencing possible explosive devices.

Police and explosive ordnance disposal team members responded to the scene and were in the process of clearing the residence.

No explosives were found inside the home.

The coordinator of school health and safety programs for Fond du Lac Schools said four schools were placed on "yellow alert," including Waters, Tyson, Piers and Evans.
