Snow-covered roads Sunday lead to rough morning commute

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Snow overnight and into Sunday morning made for slippery road conditions on Sunday morning, January 26th -- and crews were busy dealing with rollovers, wrecks and disabled vehicles. Meanwhile, bitterly cold weather is headed our way -- which will could worsen road conditions.

On Sunday morning, emergency crews responded to a traffic incident on I-43 near Keefe Ave.

A few hours later, a vehicle overturned near 894 at Oklahoma, and a short while later, a second vehicle rolled over near 894 and 27th Street.

With the snowfall, lane closures and backups were the scene on Sunday on many of the roads in the Milwaukee area. Some who were on the road Sunday morning said with blustery winds, it almost seemed like whiteout conditions in some areas.

"It was coming down pretty fast and hard at that time. I ended up taking all the back roads. That was like, very slow-moving and hard stopping. Leave early and go slow. That's all you really can do," Gary Lukowitz said.

Many of those driving on Sunday said their concern about the roads is growing as we look toward sub-zero temperatures this week.

"It's going to be pure ice. It's all fluffy and light snow like this and it's going to melt down -- going to be a mess," Lukowitz said.

"Even though you see the streets are plowed and it's still slippery out there -- still a lot of wet snow on the ground, still freezing and cars are still slipping around," Adam Bernstein said.

Trucks were out in full force on Sunday salting and plowing, but drivers say it will be important to take things slow this week.

"Just gotta be real careful. Leave extra early," Lukowitz said.

The Wisconsin DOT is urging drivers to stay off the roads Sunday and Monday unless necessary, as there could be limited visibility and slippery roads.

Drivers are encouraged to check road conditions before leaving and be sure to have a charged cell phone and a gas tank that is at least half-full.

It is also important to let friends and family know your destination before you leave.
