Free Wi-Fi now available on Amtrak's Hiawatha Service

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The next time you ride the Amtrak train from Milwaukee to Chicago, you'll have free Wi-Fi onboard.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced on Monday, February 10th the launch of Wi-Fi Internet on board Amtrak Hiawatha Service.

The implementation of the cellular-based service, called AmtrakConnect, is part of a multi-state initiative – led by Amtrak – to improve the customer experience along eight passenger rail corridors in the Midwest.

The Hiawatha Service is the busiest Amtrak route in the Midwest and the sixth busiest in the country. Since 2003, Hiawatha ridership has nearly doubled, with approximately 820,000 passengers in 2013. The train service provides seven round-trips, between the Milwaukee Intermodal Station and Chicago’s Union Station, Monday through Saturday; with six round-trips on Sunday. Passengers can also board at the Milwaukee Airport Rail Station, at General Mitchell International Airport; Sturtevant in Racine County; and Glenview, Illinois. The nearly 90-mile route is jointly funded by WisDOT and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
