Blessed Savior students back to class after flooding at school

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- This winter has been rough for some schools which had to cancel classes because of weather. Blessed Savior Catholic School's South Campus just had to miss out on three more days because of flooding in the school.

A pipe broke outside the school Thursday morning, sending water into the sanitary sewer system and into the school through the drains and urinals.

Tuesday the doors were opened to students after they had three days off while staff cleaned up. Parents were glad to see only a few days had to be missed.

“We are excited because he's been out of school so long and he's been wanting to go back to school for a while,” said James Young, a father of a student at Blessed Savior.

“I am glad they are back. She's been out a few days and I was concerned about the damage of the school and if it was even going to open again, so I’m glad,” said one student’s mother, Janice Jones.

Many parents were worried the school would have to be closed longer after seeing the damage on Thursday. Water poured out of the doors, and flowed through the hallways and classrooms. There was also a layer of sand and silt throughout the building.

The principal attributed the quick clean up to the staff and said they all worked long hours to get the school ready and safe for students to return as soon as possible. The principal said some teachers even did manual labor when necessary, moving desks and other equipment room to room. Parents said they weren’t surprised to hear this.

“They have always been like that. Even when I was watching the news I saw some of the people cleaning the hallway, so that is their normal routine,” said Jones.

Students were supposed to have Friday March 14th off, but will now have class to make up one of the missed days.

Plumbing crews were also back to work outside the school Tuesday. They say the water pipe was already fixed but they still had to repair the sanitary sewer pipe, both which were damaged Thursday.
