Match Day has arrived, why you should donate now

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It was only a matter of years ago when U.S. Marine Veteran David Acheson found himself homeless.

"You can feel real alone out there because the streets are not a nice place to be," said Acheson.

That's when the Center for Veterans Issues, or CVI, stepped in to lend Acheson a helping hand.

"They put a roof over my head, they fed me three meals a day, they redirected some of the pain and hurt and the things that put me there," said Acheson.

CVI has been a safe haven for countless veterans, providing housing, job training, and mental health services.

"It`s incumbent among us those of us in general society to ensure that those who have sacrificed, those who have served are never left behind," said CVI President and CEO Robert Cocroft.

CVI is 1 of 20 organizations participating in the Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Match Day.

Match Day is a 24 hour online fundraiser with a match pool of $750,000, which allows donors to get more bang for their buck.

"Depending upon how much money they each raise individually the Greater Milwaukee Foundation will provide a proportional match for the dollars raised for each organization," said Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin Communications Manager Gina Styer.

Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin is another nonprofit participating in Match Day.

It's these organizations that need your help to make a difference in the lives of the people who need it most.

Acheson is living this difference as he now has a home, a job, and even wedding bells in his future.

"My life is coming together, I`m getting married next week so I`m really happy so things are working out real well and so it`s great," said Acheson.

Match day begins at midnight tonight and runs through midnight tomorrow.

There is a $10 minimum donation.
