Gregory Thornton officially resigns as MPS superintendent

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- FOX6 News has learned Milwaukee Public Schools superintendent Gregory Thornton has officially resigned from the district.

This comes one day after Thornton signed a contract worth more than a million dollars with Baltimore City Public Schools.

Thornton's contract will have a base salary of $290,000 -- compared to the $265,000 base pay he received from MPS.

Thornton starts in Baltimore in July.

He served as MPS superintendent for four years.

Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Michael Bonds has issued the following statement to FOX6 News on Thornton's resignation:

“I’m grateful for Dr. Thornton’s outstanding service to this community. He created a solid foundation on which to build. I want to thank him personally for his work on behalf of this district and wish him best of luck in future endeavors. Dr. Thornton will be missed professionally and personally.”

Bonds says a meeting is planned for Thursday, March 13th at 7:00 p.m. to begin preliminary discussions regarding the process of searching for a new superintendent of schools.
