Salvation Army tries to make Match Day accessible for everyone

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Thursday, March 13th is the Greater Milwaukee Foundation's Match Day -- the day where your donations to local organization are doubled. The Salvation Army is making sure that everyone who wants to donate gets the chance.

At the click of a button, you make a difference in the lives of people in need. There are 20 nonprofits to choose from. No matter which one you choose, your donation will be matched through a pool of up to $750,000, and it's all done online.

The Salvation Army took some extra steps to make sure that those who want to donate to them have every opportunity.

“Not everybody has a computer. I know so many people in today's age do have a computer there are so many of us that don't,” said Marcy Stutzman, Special Events Director with the Salvation Army.

For those in that situation, the Salvation Army set up a small computer lab at the Divisional Headquarters on Watertown Plank Road in Wauwatosa. Volunteers were standing by to help.

“Most people if they don't have computers they ask is my identity protected? It is. They look what I'm doing, I don't hide the credit card, everything I do I do in front of them,” explained one of the volunteers.

Organizers say it's a small thing they can do that could make a huge difference for people on the receiving end and for those doing the giving.

“I was on the phone with someone this morning who was giving in honor of her husband who has passed away and was a strong supporter of the Salvation Army and it was something she was excited to do in his honor,” said Stutzman.

The computer lab at the Salvation Army headquarters in Wauwatosa is open until 6 Thursday night. Match Day runs through midnight.
