MILWAUKEE — It isn't a star player that drew dozens of Milwaukee Brewers fans to Miller Park before the crack of dawn on Tuesday, March 18th -- but rather, a meet-and-greet with the team's adopted pooch -- Brewers Hank!
It was Hank's first public appearance since he was brought to Milwaukee from Spring Training on Sunday.
Hank first appeared at camp on February 17th, the day of the first workout for pitchers and catchers. At that time, no one predicted that just one month later, Hank would be the new face of Milwaukee's baseball team.
On Tuesday morning, inside Miller Park, Hank met some of his Milwaukee fans -- and Hank merchandise was for sale. 20% of the proceeds went to the Wisconsin and Arizona Humane Societies.
Additionally, those looking to meet Hank were asked to bring in new pet items to be donated to area shelters.
On hand on Tuesday -- Hank's new mom, Marti Wronski. She says she never expected Hank would be the big star that he is.
"I think it's one of those things you couldn't possible dream up if you had meant to. I think that the message it is all sending is fantastic. It's a really feel good, fantastic story with a great cause behind it and I think that's the great part," Wronski said.
Wronski serves as the Brewers General Counsel.
Fans say Hank will bring new fans to Miller Park this Brewer season.
"It's just his cute little face -- and he's just so darling! It's really going to bring on a lot of people to cheer on the Brewers, and hopefully the Brewers will cooperate too," Jill Zentkowski said.
Hank made frequent appearances at Spring Training games in a concourse booth, where fans lined up for an opportunity to have their photo taken with Hank in exchange for a voluntary donation to the Humane Society.
Through these and other opportunities, Hank has already helped raise thousands of dollars for the Humane Society.
