Bayside home suffers attic fire; fire officials find no smoke detectors inside

BAYSIDE (WITI) -- North Shore Fire/Rescue officials say a man and two pets were able to safely evacuate a burning home on Sunday morning, April 13th. Officials say there were no smoke detectors present inside the home.

The 911 call came in around 7:30 a.m. from a resident of a home on N. Tennyson Drive in Bayside advising smoke coming from the roof.

The officials first on the scene found smoke showing from the roof of the home. Those crews first on the scene requested the alarm be upgraded to bring in additional resources.

Fire crews initiated an aggressive attack on the fire that is believed to have started in the attic.

The fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished.

No one was injured.

North Shore Fire/Rescue officials say additional crews were requested to the scene because Bayside has no fire hydrants -- so a water shuttle operation using water tankers was implemented.

"It's a little bit more labor intensive to bring your own water for the fire. That's why, unfortunately, this fire brings in a few more departments than a typical fire does in the North Shore, because we have to rely on some of the other departments to bring in their water tenders as well," North Shore Fire/Rescue Lieutenant Dan Tyk said.

Officials say fire damage was contained to the attic of the home. There is moderate smoke and water damage throughout the first floor of the home.

The damage estimate to the structure and contents is approximately $65,000.

The exact cause of this fire remains under investigation.

North Shore Fire/Rescue officials are reminding people that working smoke detectors located on every level, as well as inside and outside every sleeping area of the home provide early detection and save lives.

This latest fire in which there were no smoke detectors comes just days after a 35-year-old man was killed in a fire that broke out inside a home near 24th and Vliet in Milwaukee.

That fire occurred on Thursday night, April 10th -- and in the days that followed, Milwaukee Fire officials canvassed the area -- checking smoke detectors and installing them in homes were there were none.
