Earth Day Celebration, keeping Milwaukee clean

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Fourth Annual Urban Grassroots Earth Day Clean-Up and Celebration was held at Victory Over Violence Park on Saturday, April 19th to clean-up the environment and celebrate the community.

The Earth Day celebration is a collaborative effort involving Alderwoman Priscilla Coggs, Urban Grass Roots Inc., Career Youth Development, and Ori Entertainment.

Milwaukeeans got a jump-start on Earth Day by working to make a difference in the community and the world by cleaning up garbage and planting flowers in the community.

"It started out as a pet peeve seeing so much trash and litter in the inner city and my motto is that is we can change the way we view our community, we can change the mentality of it as well, " said Priscilla Coggs-Jones, founder of Urban Grass Roots Inc.

Volunteers focused on the area west of the park from Martin Luther King Junior Dr. all the way to 7th St.

"I've been here for 10 years, I'd like to see it change, more community helping out with each other and get the neighborhood looking nice," said volunteer Tiffany Moore.

All volunteers got free food and live entertainment from Ina Onilu Dance and Ensemble.

"It's just about community awareness and keeping the community clean, and we heavily believe in agriculture and keeping Milwaukee clean," said Kenneth Brown, volunteer with Ina Onilu Drumming and Dance Ensemble

Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22nd and every year over a billion people in 190 countries take action to help clean-up and celebrate the world.
