(CNN) -- Many of the medical volunteers who helped to save lives at last year's Boston Marathon were back this year. These brave men and women said they had to return.

There is no such thing as a calm or easy race day inside the medical tent at the Boston Marathon -- but last year, it was unfathomable.

People who volunteer to work in the tent aren't just medical experts. They're also cheerleaders, and help to provide emotional comfort to those who have reached their breaking point.

The volunteers say returning this year was a bit challenging -- but it was something they had to do.
